Heart Rate Does Not Decrease After Exercise?

Is it normal for heart rate to stay high after exercise? This prolonged elevation of heart rate post exercise is known as ‘EPOC’ (excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption). Heart rates essentially stay elevated for longer after these types of training in order to metabolise the lactate that has accumulated and return the body to homeostasis.

How long should it take for your heart rate to return to normal after exercise? Within in one minute post exercise your heart rate should be down to 150 bpm or less. At five minutes post workout you should be 120 bpm or less. If you are not at these levels, decrease the intensity of your workout and then gradually increase as your fitness level improves.
